The first step to preparing the wing tip is cutting the flange off in the area where the hinges will be mounted. I left the forward part of the flange in place to give a clean result. The hinges only extend along the tip as long as the bend is not too severe. This means there is about 8 inches around the nose of the wing tip where there is no hinge. I cut away the rest of the flange to prepare for hinge attachment. I then remounted the tip with tape to see how well if fit. I drew a line to clean up the top edge of the tip. After sanding that true, I did the same on the bottom edge. I also adjust the aft edge of the wingtip beyond the hinges so that it would clear the aileron by the Vans specified dimension of .25 inches.
