So on Day 1, my RV-8 buddy from Virginia, named Rob, texted and asked if I needed anything from Walmart...I said I would really appreciate a small cheap cooler that I could keep some water in, if he didn’t mind. .. so Rob took it a step farther - and asked if I needed a starter 6 pack? When he was done at the store... Don and I had already walked/bused to Subway to eat some dinner, so Rob asked where we were parked and the tail number… The middle picture is what I came back to see waiting for us... now the very interesting part of this story is - other than text and emails. ..I have never met Rob in person! What a guy! I did catch up with Rob the next day which was another crazy story… Don and I were sitting in a covered area with picnic tables and a few other people scattered about. As we watched airplanes, I texted Rob to see where he was - ironically, his description seemed like it was pretty close to where we were. So, I stood up to look for where they might be, when I noticed the guy at the next table looked very “Rob-like” :) I said, "Rob?"...and he said, "Jim?" Ha! Rob and his buddy Lindy (a cool Marine helo pilot, turned Bonanza pilot and RV-8 builder's assistant) had been sitting at the table next to ours the whole time Don and I sat there and we didn’t know it… Anyways, I was glad that I was able to thank Rob for the cold beer and the cooler –but he wouldn’t take any money for it. I told him I would buy the next 12 pack! Some say Pilot people are crazy... crazy good hearted, I say. ;)
All in all - It was a great time - we met many people and got to hang out with my buddy Skyking Bob from Virginia - who made his first trip to Oshkosh. Rob and Lindy were on there 13th (or so) trip to Oshkosh! We attended forums, workshops and saw the latest that the vendors had to offer. I met Bruce Bohannon - the record setting pilot that flew the "Flyin' Tiger" a highly modified RV-4.
