Some time ago, I noticed that the pilot control stick would move forward quite a distance under the panel but when pulling it back, the stick would stop short as the A/P arm would hit the stop bracket on the autopilot servo. I knew it was going to take a crawling trip into the canoe, so I have been putting it off, but today my curiosity got the best of me, and I had to figure out what's wrong. I first removed the battery, laid down some wood platforms and cushions and then climbed down into the black hole. It doesn't look like a big deal, and it isn't that far back, but there isn't room for this big boy back there as it's a lay-down job. I got the cotter pin off the castellated nut on the A/P servo arm and figured I would just need to re-clock it, but it was soon evident that was not the problem. My next suspect was that the linkage from the servo arm to the bellcrank somehow must be too long and that must be what is biasing the servo arm aft, so I measured the linkage, and it is to spec. So, I went back to Garmin G3X installation manual to review the drawings and then I saw the problem. The A/P servo arm linkage attach hole on the control bellcrank is not centered on the bellcrank, it is 4/10” forward, but unfortunately, I installed the control bellcrank where the hole is 4/10” aft of the centerline, so it is biasing the control throw aft. I looked at all the connections that would have to be un-done and re-done to flip the bellcrank around. The other option would be to re-drill the hole and move the linkage attachment, but although that is the quicker option, it’s probably not the best option, as measuring and drilling in the confined space with the bellcrank installed would not be optimal.
