Brief Description:  Wing Tip #12 - Right tip rib work

In the inner aft portion of the wing tip is a structural rib that must be riveted in place. This rib can also be adjusted fore and aft so that the aft wingtip profile matches that of the aileron...slide it aft and the wingtip area gets fatter, slide it forward and the wing tip gets skinnier. But before that can happen, because of the hinge method, the wing tip rib must also be modified and made smaller.

I inserted the rib in the wing tip to see how much I needed to remove to allow the rib to fit. I made the rough cuts and then measured again before making the new bend in the new rib side. After deburring the rib, I put it in the wing tip and held it in temporary position with tape until I was sure of the placement. I then installed the wing tip on the wing and inspected the profile of how well the tip matched the aileron. When I had adjusted the fit to my liking, I marked the holes for drilling – allowing for plenty of edge distance.

Initially, I had planned on splitting the trailing edge of the wing tip before drilling the holes in the rib, but the since the fit was very close to perfect, I didn't need to. The trailing edge of the tip will just need some extra thickness added to the inside and then it can be cut/sanded down to match the aileron trailing edge. Since I liked the rib fit, I drilled and clecoed the holes in the right wing tip and rib.
