Brief Description:  flaps - back to work

Back in the shop for some more flap work. I looked at leading edge cradle and how I could modify it to accept the flaps. See, the flaps get riveted from the absence of the forward spar opening, so it sits trailing edge down. Therefore the cradle needs to be in the shape of a “V”. I followed the lead of fellow -8 builder, Rob and modified the one side with clamped plywood to form the v-shape. I am not sure If I like what I have done, and I may need to do exactly what Rob did, which was to cut off one side of the cradle and then clamp the wood on the other to make a better “V”.

Following the plans it was time to rivet the stiffener angle to each spar. That’s a fairly easy process with the squeezer, but you just have to make sure you don’t fill the holes that will be used by the rib rivets, those get installed with the rib later. Next I drilled the hole in the inboard rib and the F706B stiffener plate that will allow the flap actuator a place to connect to the flap. The plans are a little vague at times, and I find it best to think through all the steps and make sure that when I get to the last step in the instructions, all pieces are installed/riveted. This was a time that I scratched my head for a few moments trying to figure out how when the best time to rivet the rear spar to ribs. The rear spar is a part of the lower skin and as you start to rivet the upper/lower skin together, there is no way to get to the rear spar. So… I guess that means, I need to rivet those now.

That’s about all I can do at this time – so next I will start to rivet the lower/upper skins together…of course, I will need to better modify the flap cradle.
