Brief Description:  Canopy Skirt #1

Finally got back in the shop for some airplane progress – Thanks to Bob being in town. Work, travel, the heat…all of them are factors, but not good excuses for not being in the shop more this month. It’s has actually been since 5/24 that I have worked in the shop. I have done a lot of research and reading in that time off, but no shop hours logged in 30 days.

So, today we drilled the rivet holes for the canopy skirt to bond to the canopy frame. Since I am not drilling into the canopy “glass” I will not be drilling rivet holes in the upper canopy frame tube – but will bond the upper skirt to the canopy with either fiberglass or sikaflex. The vertical rib rivet hole spacing is approximately 1.5 inches whereas the horizontal rivet spacing on the lower canopy frame is approx. 2”.

We covered the frame tubes with painter’s tape which protected the tube somewhat and also made it a little easier to drill the holes. Next we drew center lines on the ribs and horizontal tubing (tape) which showed us the center of the tubing – and is also where the holes should be drilled. After that, we made a template (as per instructions) that was used to drill the holes in the vertical ribs and will be used to also drill the rib holes in the canopy skirt. Bob had the good idea to make a few (3 or 4) templates from the first one as the holes get wallowed out a bit drilling all the ribs. That way, with the extra templates, you will still have a good one when it’s time to drill the skirt for the rib holes. We marked the distances and then using the v-tool and a level, drilled the holes directly to 1/8” (#30). The instructions say to first drill to #40, but never say to go back and drill to #30. A 1/8” blind rivet is used and since we were using the drilling tool, I wasn’t worried about the bit slipping off the tube so we drilled to 1/8” initially.
