Brief Description: Cowling #7 - Top cowl hinge work
|
|
I started work on the top cowl hinges. The top has a curvature, meaning the hinges must be clamped and drilled as you go, so it takes a little longer to complete the hinge drilling. It also means that the hinge pin used is a smaller diameter pin because, as Van's "overview" says, "It would be impossible to use 1/8" pin in the curved hinges." Also, because of the curved hinge, the hinge segments need to be tapered at the curve, which I tried doing with the Dremel tool... that was a mistake. I got too aggressive with it and took off too much of the hinge. I also dug into the hinge base several times, reducing the aesthetic value. I did have the foresight to try the tapering on the smaller hinge as that one didn't fit as well as I would have liked, so re-making that one was a given anyway. Oh well, that gives me something to do next time.
