Brief Description:  Battery Ground

Momma always told me that when you drill the longerons - you gotta be real careful and I always listen to my momma!

Since I need to tie the battery ground into the airframe structure, my first idea was to rivet a ground block to the longeron, but I was hesitant to do that because crawling back in that small space and trying to do some good riveting would be difficult to say the least. So, I pondered using pull rivets. This would have been a no-brainer easy peasy project before the side skin was on or even before the turtle deck was on,but now, it would be much more difficult to get good contact - and good contact is needed for good conduction and to ward off corrosion and arcing. So, I did some VAF research and came across an old thread that Paul Dye was on and reached out to him and asked him about my idea.

He said he liked the idea of using an extension, but he wasn't keen on the pulled rivets - he suggested (2) AN3 bolts because I could torque them down and know that they were making good contact. Thanks to Paul

I first stripped the paint/primer off the section of the longeron so there would be good metal to metal conduction, and then measured 47 times and decided on where I wanted the longeron holes. Then, carefully, as momma said, using the ground block as a drill die, I drilled the holes in the block and then the longeron with each individual hole - from 3/32" to 1/8" to 5/32" to 3/16". I then installed the 1/4" post and installed and torqued the nuts.
