Brief Description:  Service Letter-00014 Tail cone Stiffener

Van's sent out a service letter on August 26, 2020, about stiffening the tail cone on the RV-7, RV-8, and RV-9. A service letter is not mandatory., but it is a good idea, and since I am still building, now is an excellent time to complete this project.

Van's states, "Although not required, it is recommended that a small diagonal stiffener be riveted to the interior of the tail cone skin, directly below the access panel under the horizontal stabilizer, one on each side of the airplane."

Data from the field suggest that it is possible for high loads on the tailwheel to permanently deform the tail cone skin, such as when a tailwheel hits a steep bump while making a tight turn on the ground.

I ordered the part, F-00773A, from Van's. However, they are not sold in pairs - so I need two and only ordered one. No problem, with some scrap material that is the same thickness as the OEM part, I fashioned another one. After marking the rivet holes on the fuselage and drilling, deburring, and dimpling the holes in the fuse and on the parts, I riveted them in place.
