Brief Description:  Electrical discussion + two holes drilled

I was thinking about the next steps to finish out the wings and was stuck on the wiring and whether I wanted to run the wires with terminal blocks or just straight out with no terminal blocks. If the airplane were finished I would likely plan for no terminal blocks, but I believe using the terminal block is more efficient for the ongoing build. I discussed this theory at length with Bob and was looking for him to poke holes in my logic. In the end, he agreed and I am sticking with the blocks.

So out to the shop I went to noodle the best location for said terminal blocks. I know that I want them under the floor, near the spar where the wires come in from the wings. This way I can unscrew the foot wells and get to these connections and not have to un-rivet the floor if they were farther back. The other consideration is the foot wells themselves - I do not want to interfere with them. So I consulted the OP-11 (Detail R) and it shows the wires should come in 4 7/8” aft of the spar opening. When I measured where my wires were coming thru the conduit on my wings, I found it to be at 7”. Then comparing the 7” line to where the foot wells sit, the 7” looks better than the 4 7/8” distance.

I made my pilot hole at 7” aft and 1” up from the floor which is also “off plans” - Van’s showed it at ¾” up. Anyway, if you are building an RV-8, make sure you follow the plans and not my instructions – that’s my disclaimer. I then opened up the hole to 7/16” and inserted a SB437-4 snap bushing – per plans. I drilled the same hole on the other side and inserted a snap bushing there too. I spent way more time than 1.5 hours working on the airplane today, but if I logged all the “thinking time” I spend on this airplane it would be double the amount of hours at least. I am leaving the wing conduit a little long for now and if I decide to run the conduit from the wing all the way into the fuselage – then I can just remove the snap bushings and open up these holes a little more.
