Brief Description: Day 1 of the build…!! Rear Spar Assembly – HS-609
Today begins the real deal…building real live airplane parts. In actuality - Nothing TOO exciting today really, just have to take the two long pieces of aluminum bar stock and radius the sharp edges off a little (1/32) and also the ends ( ¼” ) to a smooth round end. So let’s look at the drawings…uh…problem…already… really?...dang it… You see I have been looking over these plans and drawings for so long in anticipation of actually doing some real building that I got a bit of tunnel vision on this one part. The part in the drawings shows that there is a ¼” radius on the end, but that it also tapers back 3 3/8” to a wider finish. But that just can’t be – so I go in to plan B mode…“the plans must be wrong, they changed the design and made it better - clearly” …. Wait, what does that say right there on that plan…oh, 810/814….that is a different part…”never mind!” So I radius-ed to my heart’s content being very careful not to over-radius and then I was able to shine the HS-609PP up nicely with the scotchbrite pad and some manual effort. Total build time today was 3.0 hours, but a good 0.5 of that had to be head-scratching time although I didn’t actually clock it.
Picture of me carefully radius-ing!
Picture of what I was seeing
....not matching up with the part in my hand...my mistake, wrong part.
