Brief Description:  First attempt at spraying

First full day working on the plane, as opposed to kitting out the workshop.

After extensive research on the web, and having consulted a couple of RV builders and my LAA inspector, Tim, I have decided to go with a two-part etch primer from LAS Aerospace.

The primer is PR30B and is mixed 1:1 with TH34B, a catalytic thinner. I understand it is waterproof, and comes out a brown/yellow colour.

I also bought a container of Deoxidine 624, a liquid surface cleaner. All of this stuff is somewhat nasty, so should be applied with breathing apparatus.

First job is to remove the lovely shiny aluminium surface, by rubbing with Scotchbrite pads. This roughes the surface. Afterwards, I sprayed on the Deoxidine which I had decanted into a spray bottle. After rubbing this in, again with the Scotchbrite pad, I left for a few minutes, then rinsed off in a large container of water, before finally drying with Sandra's old hair dryer. The resulting surface is clean, and matt.

My first attempt at spraying was rubbish! I had bought a touch-up spray gun, to do the small parts. I also have a gun with a large capacity can for spraying large surfaces, but I didn't have the courage to try this just yet.

First up was these small parts, sprayed in my mini-paint-booth. These were followed by the vertical stabiliser skeleton parts - spar and ribs. I was not proud of the outcome. As you can see, the stuff is very patchy. Having ignored all of the good advice on the web, I kept spraying until I was sure I had enough paint on. At this point, much too much has gone on, and it is running through the lightening and rivet holes, and generally looks a mess.

All I can say is, once dry, the parts are protected.
