Brief Description:  Inspection

Tim came up to start, and hopefully finish, the final inspection. He had fabricated a nipple to attach a fuel line to the banjo fitting for a fuel flow test. Unfortunately the thread was 10mm x 1mm and Tim had used a 1.5mm die. So the fuel flow tests will have to wait.

As I had disturbed the controls to adjust the flaperon rigging, Tim made me unscrew the seat pan cover again - all 70 screws. Everything was OK, so we signed-off the duplicate inspection of the controls and I was left with the task of screwing everything up again.

As noted in the web site, the tension in the stability cables distorts the bulkhead in front of the seats. It is not an easy job removing the screws in this area, and is harder still to do them up as there is maybe 1/8 inch problem where the holes don't line up. I used the end of a thin round file to line up the holes and, predictably, snapped off the end of the file in the hole. Fortunately, I managed to extract it without having to drill it out. All this could be avoided if Vans just provided a doubler in the area close to the stabilitor cable pulley.

Tim measured the deflections of the control surfaces, for posterity, and measured the prop blade angle too. Getting closer...
