Brief Description:  More gooping

No pics, but I did some more messy work on the fuel tank. It was relatively easy to attach the back plate to the tank.

Next job was a trial install of the fuel sending unit. The main point is to adjust the float arm, as necessary, so that it senses the empty and full conditions without catching on the baffles.

Initially, I could not get the full range of movement, until I realised the float arm was being restricted by a black cable. I pushed this out of the way, and everything was OK.

Last job was to seal in the transparent window and the backing plate. I followed the plans carefully, but they give no indication of how much sealant should be applied (a thin layer!). I'm really nervous about this, because once the goop sets on the backing plate, there's no way to fix any leaks at the window other than ripping everything out and purchasing a new window. This is the single biggest headache for most builders, some of whom have given up and sealed the entire area, either using a dipstick for checking the fuel, or installing a separate unit. No way to check it until the sealant has dried (maybe a week) by which time the die is cast.

I found that mixing 2.5g of hardener with 25g of sealant is good for a small job, while 5g of hardener with 50g of sealant was enough for bigger jobs. We'll see whether I have been much too economical. I certainly have lots of stuff left over.
