Brief Description: Fabricate fuel return line
After a stunning day's flying to Coll on Saturday, I got stuck in for another week's building. Today's task was to make the fuel return line from the engine, back to the fuel tank - a requirement for mogas engines to better cope with the higher volatility of the fuel. Just two parts to make - a short section to mirror the routing of the main fuel line from the tank to the pump, and then a long section between there and the engine.
Picture 1 shows the main fuel line from the tank to the pump. Picture 2 shows the return line which follows the same route - indeed the pipes are clamped together. My first attempt was OK and would have worked, but was rather "inelegant". Picture 3 shows the installation.
The fabrication of the second, long, pipe run went wrong from the start. The hacksaw "caught" at the very end of the cut, and put a slight crimp in the tube, maybe an inch from the end - wish I had a proper pipe cutter! Using a variety of objects, I opened up the tube so that it wasn't constricted, but it wan't quite circular in cross-section. After bending and installing the pipe I could not get the collar of the fastener to go past the imperfection, so I could not flare the tube. In the end I gave up in disgust, and used the large piece of scrap as an opportunity to redo the first piece. So now I am going to have to wait for the stuff I ordered from LAS in anticipation...
