Brief Description:  Further prep on flaperons

Picture 1 shows the end of the left flaperon spar with the bracket attached to the inboard nose rib. A hole should have been previously drilled in the actuation bracket flange to line up with the bottom hole in this bracket. Initially I couldn't figure how to drill the hole accurately (it's all very well following the drawing, but I cannot drill a hole sufficiently accurately - need to get a hole punch), so I clamped the Actuation Bracket to the bracket shown in Picture 1, before riveting), then match drilled with a number 12 drill. The plans call for a 3/16ths drill, but a number 12 is only a couple of thou off so assume this will be fine.

Screwfix do a rather fine complete set of drills for £40 or so. It's probably worth getting this, because I keep needing a drill that I don't have, and B&Q only seem to do metric units, so a shortfall invariably involves ordering over the internet, often from the US of A. (Update - I latterly bought these!).

Picture 2 shows the actuation bracket with the hold drilled in the flange. It also includes 6 holes that have been match-drilled through the spar. The plans don't specify exactly how to locate the bracket vertically (with respect to the top of the spar). The result is lob-sided. The bottow two holes are too close to the edge. I checked the MIL spec, which says that the centre of 1/8th inch holes need to be 0.2 inches (actually 0.215 of something) from the edge. These are only about 0.15 inches away. So, I reckon I'll have to scrap this part and reorder some more angle stock.

Picture 3 shows the mirror-image actuation bracket on the right spar. This time, I learned from my mistake and ensured that the holes are located symmetrically. Note how close the rivets are to the flange of the actuation bracket. Too close for comfort, and other builders had commented on the difficulty of setting these rivets. I ended up banging them with a hammer to get them to bed in as closely as possible to the flange, before I squeezed them. My inspector will check...
