Brief Description:  Finish tailplane (that's the intent anyway)

I planned to complete the tailplane today, before starting on the skinning of the left wing. Things started OK, as I clecoed the little plate that joins the two skins together, and match drilled a couple of tiny holes into the aft flanges of these skins. See Picture 1. The two holes are #52 - haven't yet figured what they are for. (Found out later they are for safety wire to lock the hinge pins to the aft flanges.)

Next step (Step 3) was to rivet the hinges to the rear of the tailplane. I clecoed them on to check the fit and was dismayed to find that the handful of "special" holes where the tailplane ribs are (page 09-08 Step 3) were about half-a-hole too high. The instructions were not adequately clear, for me at least. You must cleco the hinge to the lower line of holes to drill the "special" holes. And ensure that you have the hinge the right way up (the hingeline should be in the centre of the aft flanges). I clecoed the hinges upside-down. Big mistake. I'll probably have to fabricate two new hinges, and now the skins are riveted in place I can no longer match drill as per the instructions.
