Brief Description:  Elevators - 06 - Fitting for Rudder Hole Drilling

Spent some time ensuring the elevators were where I wanted them to be before drilling the elevator horns. Although I had found a bushing to drill the elevator horns I wasn't so sure the rod end bearings were set right. I adjusted them according to the plans but the leading edges seemed awfully close to the horizontal stabilizer spar stiffners.

I had hung the elevators with some fabricated alignment tools (Penny Nails bent at a 90 degree angle). This was OK for doing a preliminary check but due to the fact that the nails were not at the same diameter as the rod end bearings, there was a little bit of play. Not to mention I couldn't check for the correct angle of movement in the up position (The nails stuck out of the access holes and would stop the upward movement).

Solution: put the bolts in the holes. So with a lot of fiddling I got the bolts in and I was glad I did. The leading edge on the inboard side of the elevators was rubbing on the HS spar stiffener. At this point I was a bit discouraged and decided to tackle it at a latter date.
