Brief Description: Horizontal Stabilizer - 05 - Left HS Section
- NOTE: Realized that I had drilled the center rib to skin with a #30 bit last night (HS-405 to HS-601) instead of a #40. The plans call for AN426AD3 rivets that are much smaller than the AD4's that have been used for spar assembly. OOOPS, lessons learned. Wasn't that part of the Amateur built clause, "Education?" I think I can still use the part, I just may have to put bigger rivets in those holes. - Match drilled bottom of Left Horizontal Stabilizer Center Rib (HS-405) to HS skin (HS-601) with #40 bit. - Drilled front spar to skin (HS-702 to HS-601) with #40 bit. - Drilled and clecoed center rib to front to front spar and inboard nose rib (Left HS: HS-405 to HS-702 to HS-404). - Drilled and clecoed center rib to spar and attach / reinforcement angles (Left HS: HS-405 to HS702 to HS-710 and HS-714). The plans are not easy to read IRT the hole locations. I had originally only made pilot holes in the forward tab of the center rib (HS-405). These are the pilot holes to attach the center rib to the forward spar and the trimmed tab on the inboard nose rib. I drilled and clecoed these and that held everything in place while I had to measure, mark, center punch and carefully drill the other two holes through the attach angles. The plans say to use an angle drill or a 12" drill bit. I have the 12" bits but they hit the rear spar when trying to get into the corner. I was able to get in with the regular bit, I just moved the clecos to the opposite side of the forward spar. - Finally cut the strips of plastic off the skins to get them ready for dimpling. - Removed skin from assembly (Left HS section). - Drilled outboard holes of the attach / reinforcement angles to the forward HS spar (Left HS: HS-710 and HS-714 to HS-702). - Disassembled unit for deburring, prep and prime. I am going to do a large batch all at one time so I'll wait until I do the Right HS.
