Brief Description: Drilled LH skin off of horizontal stab.
Regression instead of progression today, but it needed to happen. Way back when I built the horizontal, I was one of the unlucky ones that received a mis-bent skin from Van's. (2007) I did not realize that this skin was mis-bent until after the fact. The RH skin was perfect, so when I lined up the trailing edges, the leading edge was where it was supposed to be. When I copied this procedure to the LH skin, the improperly bent leading edge induce a fair amount of washout (twist) from root to tip. Once the elevators were built and temp installed, this caused about a .7" split between the LH stab tip, and the LH elevator counterweight. I could live with .125 or less, but this was too much. So yesterday, I finally decided to drill out all the rivets on the LH side and remove that skin. I ordered a new skin with my fuse kit, knowing it needed replaced. If you are wondering, there are 240 rivets holding each stab skin on. I thought it would take most of the day to drill them out, but once I got in a routine, the skin was REMOVED in 58 minutes. And no holed were harmed in the process.:) Since it took much less time than expected to remove the skin, I built a fixture/jig (again) for the horizontal. I will get the new skin trimmed in place, and back drill all the holes. Should have a completed horizontal (again) by next weekend I hope.

See how the leading edge runs downhill?
