Brief Description:  Engine tear-down

Laid the core on 4" blocks to support and removed all the case fasteners. One of these was a hidden safetied castle nut behind the camshaft gear (accessory drive for left magneto). It is also necessary to 'tap out' the through bolts, the six largest cylinder bolts after removing the nuts. Gentle taps with a mallet and the case halves separate.

One case half lifts off and the bottom half remains with the crankshaft, camshaft and half the valve tappets. The other case half also has 4 tappets which can fall out easily. Caution, don't drop 'em. And keep them in order.

The forward main bearing showed an odd wear pattern, possibly related to the last few seconds of running during the prop strike. There are no other obvious broken, damaged or deformed components. Some visible run-out on the flange.
