Made a visit to the machine shop today to begin evaluating the potential to 'part-out' the O-360-A3A to offset the cost of the O-360-J2A. Trying to decide on having parts inspected and hopefully 'yellow-tagged' before selling them. Shop is also a potential buyer of some or all of the -A3A parts (except crandshaft and maybe sump).
Found out that the -J2A sump probably has a smaller carb intake for the MA 4-SPA than the -A3A carb MA 4-5. Sure enough, the -A3A sump is approx 2.4" dia and the -J2A sump is 2". This will be a performance factor, and needs to be addressed. With the -J2A engine 'de-rated' for helicopter use, the assumption is that the carb was part of that limitation (as well as 2400 RPM max).
Will discuss swapping the -A3A sump to the -J2A engine to prepare for F/I (AFP) operations.
Also heard from someone on the VAF forum about my interest in selling the MA 4-5 carb. Agreed on a price and exchanged email, and addresses.
Need to follow-up with AirFlow Performance on the sum intake size question.
