Brief Description:  Spar bolt hole, preparations

In preparation for inserting the wings in the relatively near future, I worked on cleaning out the close tolerance bolt holes in the wing spars. The larger holes were clearly too tight for the bolts, with visible primer overspray in almost all holes. One hole on top, and one on the bottom of each spar had already been cleaned up substantially. With ANY material in the holes, the bolts will jam during insertion and the result could be over application of percussive tools (a bigger hammer) and damage to the spar.

Several Vans articles address this issue and advise the builder to anticipate the problem. The recommendation seems to be that a cautious use of emery cloth rotated in the holes will clean up the paint, debur sharp edges, and remove the slight amount of material. After spinning a dowel, with a piece of emery cloth wrapped at the end, the holes cleaned-up, and it was possible to gently tap in a test bolt.

The next size hole was too small for the dowel. A ream will probably be needed. I had a ream for the 3/16th holes.

Cleaned up all the large holes and all the small holes, and will have to revist the medium holes.
