Brief Description:  First engine run

Rolled it out, tied the tailwheel to the car on a 50ft rope. Turned the fuel valve on, major leak at the gascolator bowl. Tightened the bowl, still a leak. Loosened the clamp on the fuel line to the engine mount, still a leak. Loosened the bowl clamp to the firewall, leak done. Lesson is probably can't hang a gasco from its bowl. I had preset the mixture needle yesterday to about 3 3/4 turns up from full down. First engine "run" was a puff of gas then it stopped. Too lean. Reset the fuel needle about 1/2 turn. Still puffing gas, then stopping. Reset another 1/2 turn. Ok, now it runs, mostly continuously, but not very smooth at all at low rpm. Reset another 1/2 turn. Ok, now it will run about as long as I'd like, and pulling back to idle it sputtered at about 400 rpm or so then died. I think I have the idle screw all the way in (highest speed idle). That's enough for today, but the mixture still has some more to go. The set screw may drive the adjust screw down some fraction of a turn, so when you pull the set screw, adjust the mix screw, and reset the set screw, you may not get the full amount of the mixture adjustment. In this case, I have seen the mixture improve adjusting in 1/2 turn increments, so regardless of what the set screw is doing I can keep going. Fair sized oil leak at the oil cooler fitting on the oil filter spacer ring. That's a fitting I installed - not a big deal to pull the lines and filter off and rework it.
