Brief Description:  Riveting Left Flap

Today Andrew and I started riveting the left flap together per the Vans plans and directions. We used mostly 426 rivets but a few 470 rivets which were all squeezed. Most of the 426 rivets were bucked and a few hand squeezed or air squeezed.

The one place we had a problem with was where the three LP-4-3 rivets are popped into the 406A/spar/704 rib holes. These three holes are to close to the angle so we could not get either rivet squeezer to fit all the way down onto the rivet. We tried using both the yellow Stanley rivet squeezer and the Tight Space rivet squeezer....but no joy.

So I called a fellow RV-8 builder friend named Jim Novak and he looked at his and was able to send me a few pics of how he popped those three rivets. I will post pics of this on tomorrow's posting but basically Jim "grinded down" a portion of the head of his Stanley rivet squeezer so that it could fit flushly against the rivet and the aluminum angle. Thanks Jim for the help!!!!

Tomorrow Andrew and I will finish the left flap and hopefully finish the right one to!!!
