Brief Description:  Elevator Torque Tube, Part 2

On the ends of the elevator torque tube, there is a small spacer (#14 in the picture of the torque tube in a previous entry). This is about 5/8" long, aluminum and fits over a 3/4" aluminum tube (the torque tube. Unfortunately, my kit was missing these two pieces. So, once again, it was back to the metal lathe to custom create the parts.

The first picture shows the raw stock (two aluminum 1" rods) and an approximate example of the finished part. This is actually a spacer from the rudder pedal and is too short (about 5/16" wide instead of 5/8"), but if gives you the basic idea.

The elevator control horn will go on the end of this space, and the spacer must fit inside the rivets holding the control horn to its flange. Picture #2 shows the finished fit of this. As you can see, the spacer fits inside the ring of rivets quite well.

Of course, I also needed to ensure that the torque tube would fit inside the space. The third picture shows this.

Once the internal and external sizing was complete, I parted off (cut) the spacers, first one and then the second.
