Brief Description: Elevator Torque Tube, Part 1
The first picture shows a diagram of the Elevator Torque Tube assembly. The tube sits in the front of the fuselage and acts as a type of bellcrank. A rod from the front joystick will attach to the top center (where the bolt #11 goes through parts 9 and 6), and the elevator control horns (#16), which are on the outside of the fuselage pod, connect to pushrods to the elevator assembly.
In my case, I ws missing two plastic washers, #9. I ordered some nylon rod from Aircraft Spruce and used my mini-lathe to custom make them. The second picture shows the raw rod on the lathe and about to be parted (cut-off).
The third picture shows the washers temporarily in place. As you can see, this was a pretty small job that took a lot of time. Part of the reason is that I was also learning to use my metal mini-lathe, so there was a learning curve involved. For instance, as I was turning the nylon, it would start melting a bit, which would clog up the cutting tool and cause the nylon to jam. Eventually, I got it done.
