Brief Description:  Canard Mount Assembly: Part 1

I'm FINALLY starting the actual contruction!

The manual is separated into 5 sections, labled A (Prefix), B (Part 1: Fuselage), C (Part 2: Wings, Canards, Tip Rudders and Winglets), D (Part 3: Assembly/Installation of Power System) and E (Part 4: Operation & Maintenance). The actual construction starts with section B (Fuselage) and everything before Part 5 is background and reference information.

5.1 is "Canard Mount Assembly". Here's the text:
"Locate canard mount assembly dimple in nose of the pod. Drill a 3/8" hole. Place washer (1) on outside of nose and use a 3/8" bolt to hold it in place temporarily. Using washer for a pattern, drill out the four holes to be riveted. With washer (1) in place on outside of pod, rivet (2) from inside pod. Note: Riveting from INSIDE will make it easier to secure wingnut inside when attaching canard bolt."

The first issue, and a minor one, was that the 3/8" hole had already been drilled. Actually, this is the hole that I have been using to support the forward section of the fuselage in my Fuselage Rotisserie. I'm not sure if that was done a previous owner of my kit or the factory did it and the instructions are just wrong. No problem.

The second issue, and another minor one, was that the washer was not pre-drilled with the four rivet holes. No problem, I marked and drilled the washer and then painted it with a primer.

The third issue, and a bigger one, is that the rivets are too short! The third picture below shows the washer in place and being temporarily held with three rivets inserted from the outside. The fourth rivet is inserted from the inside (like they all will be when they are set in place) and, as you can see, it barely protrudes; certainly not enough for a proper grip. I measured the depth that the rivet would have to hold (the "Grip Range") and it was a little over .6"...over 1/2 an inch. The rivet called for is an SD68BS steel pop-type rivet.
