Brief Description:  U-1018C Nose Gear Leg Hinge and the U-1018A Nose

SECTION 48-21

November 30th, 2010

Step 1 … I located the piano hinge that has a 0.63 inch thickness (U-1018C) and about 4 feet in length from the dwindling items in the Finishing Kit. Now I taped the bottom halves of the U-1018A Nose Gear Leg Fairing bottoms together. Then I placed into the “V” of the gear fairing the U-1018C hinge. And marked on the outside of the fairing 0.25 inch from the top of the U-1018C hinge along the entire hinge. See Figure 1 for details.
Step 2 … I removed the U-1018C Nose Gear Leg Hinge from the U-1018A Nose Gear Leg Fairing. I drew drill marks at the 0.25 inch from the top of the hinge at 1 and 15/32” and 1 and 5/16”. These marks are visible through the translucent fiberglass where I drilled into the U-1018A Nose Gear Leg Fairing and into the U-1018C Nose Gear Leg Hinge using a #40 size drill bit, being careful not to apply too much pressure on the hinge.
Step 3 … Now I removed the hinge pin, separated the two hinges into halves and inserted the Left side of the marked up hinge into the U-1018A Nose Gear Leg Fairing. Aligning carefully with the previously made marks I clamped both ends and in the center and using a #40 size drill bit I carefully Match Drilled each mark and clecoed as I went. I repeated for the other Right side hinge. And I countersunk the very thin fiberglass for AN426AD3-3.5 rivets. Now I removed some of the hinge in four places where the notch in the Nose Gear Leg brackets interferes with nose gear fairings. Now I trimmed the U-1018C hinge to 31.5 inches in length. Now with the hinge pin removed I riveted the Left side first with AN426AD3-3.5 rivets. Repeated the riveting for the Right side.
Step 4 … I trimmed and sharpened the tip of the hinge pin. And I added a 0.25 inch, 90 degree bend at the top.

Time about 3 hours because I was working slowly.
