SECTION 45-08 (final Door entry)
09/04/2010

Today I finally finished the Doors!! (except for painting and finish sanding the fuselage /door interface). I am vary pleaded with the outcome! I am able to open and close each door with one hand movement. Instead of white grease I used Vaseline to insure smooth operation of the door mechanical mechanisms. I estimated that I took about 2 months or at least 160 hours or 80 hrs each !!! Changing to the Carr McMaster Door seal was the reason for the extra time as the fuselage door / lip interface needed to be trimmed at least twice (first for Van’s supplied door seal then for the McMaster seal) and the doors screw/nut/washers need a cover designed. Also for mainteance reasons I made a set of four Nut Covers to cover the nuts in the hinges. Four of these needed fabricated. Also I finished gluing (welding) both of the back passenger transparences or windows with no difficulty using the Van’s recommended Weldon glue. I have learned that it seems that any time you deviate from the Van’s plans you add time and difficulty to your experimental aircraft project. But changing to the new seal design was worth the extra time and effort to improve the project’s gull-wing doors overall visual look.

Time about 8 hrs.
