Brief Description:  alignment tests

I did some elevator alignment tests after bolting both on - if the counterweight arms are aligned with the horizontal stabilizer, then the elevator trailing edges are not lined up. They are straight and parallel, but 3/4 inch off vertically. Another thing noticed was the trim tab cants off at an angle due to some twist I had not noticed. After doing some online research, it became apparent that the trailing edge alignment issue is common. It will be important when the elevator horns are connected to the pushrod at final plane assembly that the elev TE's be aligned - thus, the counterweight arms will be off a little from the HS - I measured this, and gound one will be up 1/4", the other down 1/4". From the ground, no one will notice especially if the elevators are not in trail (eg stick pulled back), and in the air, the slight drag will be negligible. I studied the elevators, and all looks well with no twist. There is nothing I can do for this now except some serious surgery. But for the trim tab, I do not want twist. Thus, I drilled out the end tab pop rivets and tried to flex and massage the tab into straightness - a couple creases formed, so I scrapped the idea and ordered new parts from Van's to remake the trim tab. This time, instead of those tabs on the end you fold over, i will cut them off and build ribs to fit and rivet. Arghh, but still only a minor setback.
