Brief Description:  elevator counterweights, bearings

Trimmed the 4 lead counterweights, but botched one, so need to reorder one from Van's. Right elevator weights were cut with the bandsaw, filed, then primed. I drilled out the holes a bit, then AN3 bolts, washers and nylock nuts attached (see grey weights left side of pic). An issue I don't like is that the nuts are to the outside and will be hidden by the fiberglass wing tip. I would rather be able to see the nuts on the other side where they would be visible during a walk-around inspection, but they probably wouldn't clear the HS. I will probably add another fastner, perhaps a screw, as per an RV Aviator article I read. Losing one of these weights in flight would be improbable, but the resultant flutter could be disasterous. Next, I screwed in all the bearing ends - Van's instructions recommend 13/16 inch from spar to bolt hole center with an allowance up to 7/8 inch. I went to 13/16, attached the elevator, and had some leading edge rub on the HS spar, so backing the rod end bearing out 1 turn was perfect. The jam nut was tighted by the 'Guttenteight' technique. I temporarily attached the elevators using allen wrenches (2 sticking up in the elevator/HS gap in pic 1, and closeup in pic 2), then fed in the bolts with taped over needle nose pliers. The elevtor swung freely, albeit 'nose'-weighted with the lead in the counterweight arm. Next, I need to attach the left elevator after I drill the HS center bushing hole into the right elevator control arm. I will use a sawed off 1/4 inch headphone plug as my drill bushing to protect the bearing, take off the elevator, then drill to size.
