Brief Description: Vern Darley for EAA inspection-Transition training
Vern Darley, EAA technical advisor, came down from Peachtree City in his RV6A with an O-320 Lycoming & fixed pitch Sensenich prop for another inspection of our bird and to give Claude and me some transition training. He suggested that we: 1. Put some 3/4" heater hose on our lower engine mounts and hold them on with hose clamps to pull the exhausts out as far laterally as possible to prevent the pipes from vibrating against engine mounts 2. Install a quick drain for the oil 3. Put fuel lube on the fuel caps 4. Make rudder cable fairings. He gave us a simple method of fabricating them from some sheet aluminum. 5. File off some of the inner surface of the horz. stabilizer fairing to get a better fit. 6. Use some oil on the bows to mark the center of the bows for drilling. We will do that Monday. 7. There is a slight deformity of the rear of the fuse overlying the rudder that we bent when we were driving some rivets to mount the vert. stabilizer Overall, he seemed to be pleased with the plane.
When we finished the inspection, Claude went up for 15 min. and I for 1 hour of transition training. I did 6 landings, slow flight, stalls, and steep turns. I also demonstrated a dead stick landing & greased it in. I need to practice my steep turns for I lost altitude during the 45 degree turns. He talked about emergencies that I might encounter during first flights. I need to go over my emergency procedures.
