Brief Description:  Prepared to drill rear spar

Today we strung 4 plumb babs from leading edge of wing and all lined up perfectly. Then we measured from wing tip to center of tail and both wings were the same. This showed that the sweep of the wings was "spot on". We next cut a wood blockas specified on the plans, leveled the fuselage, and checked the angle of attack with a level supported in the rear by the block of wood placed right over the rear spar. We did this on both wings and found them to be correct and equal without having to do any adjusting. Claude had made a circle on the computer on a piece of paper with a 5/8" radius which was the minimium edge clearance needed around the bolt hole we are to drill in the rear spar. Using this for a guide, we found we have in the inboard-outboard plane exactly 5/8" on the right wing with none to spare. If the drill wanders any we will be too close to the edge. I cut a 1" block of steel with the cut-off wheel and drilled it with a #30 drill to use as a drill guide. We plan to place the guide over the spar and insert the #30 drill catching it in the dimple as can be seen in Image #3, clamping it all in place and drilling the spar. The worrisome thing is we don't have ANY room for error. I am going to call Van's this afternoon and see if they have any suggestions.
