Brief Description:  Avionics - Comm 2 and Tranponder Install

Completed assembly of Comm2 and Transponder brackets...

After attempting to install the transponder tray after the bracket was installed in the airframe, I could only easily reach one of the four screws that hold the tray to the bracket bottom plate, the other three were encumbered by other structure. I even purchased a mini ratchet set in an ill-fated attempt to set the screws, but just could not get enough on the screws given the really tight quarters.

Decided the tray has to be installed to the bracket plat prior to installing the bracket in the airframe, which means not using AN365 nuts to hold the bracket to the airframe, but instead using nut plates.

Located the appropriate nut plates on the front and rear L-Angle brackets of the transponder bottom plate. I had to drill relief holes for the aft side nut plates since the transponder tray was only about 1/16" away from the L-Angle. Also drilled relief holes for the nut plate screws as well. The trailing edge of the nut plate where the screw is witnessed is a perfect fit against the transponder tray, so the transponder will not bump into the screw protruding from the nut plate.

Now, I am able to assemble the transponder tray to the bracket bottom plate prior to installing in the airframe, and using the AN8 screws secure the bracket to the airframe.

Finally, using 6 AN8 screws, secure the Comm 2 radio to the bottom of the bracket into previously located nut plates in the U-Channel immediately under the transponder tray bottom plate.

I made sure the transponder and Comm 2 can be installed and removed from under the instrument panel, by installing each as if the fuse top skin was riveted in place. With the seats in it was easy.
