Before heading out today I had a bit of time to trial fit Garmin's rack that houses the GTN750Xi navigator within the instrument panel. This unit is heavy; probably as much as all the other units combined. Never-the-less, the installation appears to be straight forward. One issue I have noticed is that there is little to no edge overhang on the unit's face as it marries up to the panel. I will need to triple check my measurements to get the mounting true to the allotted cutout.
The GTN750Xi is a powerhouse of a navigator. In my many years as a flight engineer aboard Lockheed's C-130 for the US Air Force, I have crewed with more than a few excellent navigators, however, I'm betting none of them could come close to matching the wits of this electronic box.
The comradery among military members is unmatched. My career with the Air Force was memorable & I thank the taxpayers for sending me on many around the world tours with a group of superb professionals. Although I was not directly affected by the launch of Lockheed’s technologically advanced C-130J, my crew position as flight engineer was eliminated from this model. The navigator's position was spared; not so much that it was needed - they just had a better union.
Currently, the Air Force is conducting test that may lead to the elimination of yet another crew position - the copilots. Should testing bear fruit, the mighty Hercules may someday become a one pilot aircraft. As for the navigator, it will be just a matter of time before that position succumbs to the same fate as the flight engineer & possibly the copilot. At that time, I'll feel my colleague's pain, as they too are put out to pasture by enhanced technology & shortages within the aviation sector. Life goes on...
