Brief Description:  Simple Task Gone South...

It is amazing how quickly a simple task can turn into a pain.

To connect the yaw damper control cables to the rudder control system, I first wanted to connect the rudder's cabling to the pedals. Easy; 2 bolts, 6 washers, 2 nuts & 2 cotter pins.

Vans design allows for the rudder panel assembly to be moved into one of three locations, dependent upon builder's height & comfort. In order to accommodate the needed flexibility to the length of the rudder cabling (a fixed length), Vans uses cable links to afford or take away slack. As is sometimes the case; I over-thought this task.

My initial thinking was; with the rudder in its neutral position, I'd pull the cables taunt & then fasten them to one of the seven best fit link locations available. Easy right? Well, that worked to some degree but, I could not get the rudder to contact its stop when deflected to the left. It would do so only to the right. Checking for binding, etc. & trying a multitude of cable link hole locations, I became frustrated & reached out for guidance.

Karl A. was available over the weekend & offered his thoughts. By chatting with him & referencing a few builder's sites, I was finally able to get full left & right rudder deflection to the rudder stops without excessive slack in the linkage.

In a nut shell: my initial thinking was 180 degree out of where it needed to be. Everyday is a learning day.

Thank you Karl..!
