Brief Description: Conformal mount, top anti-collision beacon, part 1
The top anti-collision beacon sits on top of my fuselage. Problem: The light's base is flat, but the fuselage skin is curved. I didn't like the cheap Home Depot-grade foam I used between the light and the skin, so I decided to fabricate a conformal mounting base.
First, I enlisted my young nephew Noah Thompson to climb back and hold the nut while I unscrewed the mounting screw. All this made it immediately apparent to me that I should install nutplates to make future maintenance a one-man job. We installed and tapped the nutplate, and drilled the wire pass-through hole wide enough to allow blade connectors for the wiring to pass through.
By the way, we did the same nutplate and wire connector job for the lower beacon as well.
