I sent the skid tubes out to have them hard coat anodized. This coating is extremely hard and very resistant to abrasion and will not chip or scratch like a painted surface will. If you're interested, the industry process specification most commonly used is MIL-A-8625 Type III Class II Color Black (other colors may be specified).
