Brief Description:  Centre Console

During the week I took delivery of a pre-made centre console from Aircraft Extras, and today I thought I'd start installing it. Shouldn't be too hard.

First I thought I'd put the floor and seats back in place so I could sit the console into position and see how it feels. I'm glad I did, because it's way too high. It sits about 50mm higher than the arm rests built into the fuselage side walls, and you feel very awkward with one arm up high, and one normal. I'd be forever banging my elbow into it.

After much deliberation I decided to cut it down so that it's level with the existing arm rests. The last photo shows what I did.

The whole assembly is held together with pop rivets, and a keen eye will see that I also replaced some of these with flush solid rivets. The console wraps over the flap motor support bracket at the back, but the "blind" side of the pop rivets made for a very ordinary fit. They protrude too much. I opted to drill them out, countersink both sides of the rivet holes, and double-set. Much neater, and a much better fit.

I'll finish this job off another day.
