Brief Description: 1: Drilling the Wing Rear Spar Bolts
|
|
I started today by re-checking the wing position (squareness to fuselage, sweep and angle of incidence), and since I again felt all is in correct alignment, I decided to drill the rear spar attach bolt positions.
The hole centre must be a minimum 5/8" from the edge of any part, so I carefully placed texta marks to identify this. I then centre-punched a hole position smack inthe centre of the good-to-go area.
Using my right angled drill extension, and starting with a 3/32" bit as the initial pilot, I was able to drill up to 1/4", being the largest size bit I could use in my right-angle extension. The hole needed to be 5/16" however, and I found that a standard length drill bit did not allow me to hold the drill perpendicular to the hole being drilled. The drill body itself was hard up against the fuselage skin. I needed to go buy another stand-alone drill chuck, and an extension bar, so I could drill from 12" away, thereby allowing proper alignment with the hole. A long series drill bit would have done the same thing, but my local hardware store didn't have any in stock.
With the hole drilled I then installed the 5/16" bolt and cleaned up the swarf.
Same on both sides.
