Brief Description:  Preparing the Rudder Skins

First up tonight I got to the external surfaces of the rudder skins with my soldering iron and removed the blue film from the rivet lines. Then I set about match drilling all the stiffeners to the skins.

The Vans manual suggests that this is easier if you have a table top that you can drill into, so I got myself a 1500 x 900mm piece of 16mm particleboard to put under the skins when drilling. Worked a treat.

After match drilling the instructions say to deburr all the holes before dimpling, however I was sure that I'd previously read in my Standard Aircraft Handbook that when dimpling you shouldn't deburr. I went back to the handbook, and sure enough, it says just that....in two seperate sections. With that in mind I decided to not deburr the holes, and instead went straight into dimpling.

I dimpled all the stiffener rivet holes in the skins with my c-frame, and the stiffener holes with my hand dimple tool. 450 holes drilled and dimpled.
