Brief Description:  Visited the Wright B Flyer Hangar (MGY)

It's cold and snowy in Ohio this morning so I decided to visit an airplane project located at Dayton Wright Brothers Airport (MGY). The Wright B Flyer Museum has operated a replica Wright B for a number of years. About three years ago, however, they embarked on a new project to build a lighter weight flying replica that could be more easily maintained and shipped around the world to participate in various air events. The new airplane has become known as the "Silver Bird" or "B in a Box".

I have included some pictures below of the aircraft as it nears completion. This aircraft is completely scratch built by a group of volunteers at the museum. The plane retains the overall Wright look and style but the components, of course, are current aircraft grade materials. The engine, for example, is a Lycoming HIO-360 (200 HP) and the instruments come from vendors such as Dynon, Microair, etc. The drive train, like everything else, is a unique design fabricated specifically to meet the requirements of this aircraft. Actually, the drive train has been one of the most challenging sub-systems on the bird and is currently undergoing some engineering changes.

Hopefully, the final fabrication and assembly tasks can be accomplished for inspection and initial flight tests this summer.
