Brief Description:  Final preparation of parts for both ailerons

Today was spent doing all the final preparation of parts for assembly of the ailerons. The morning began with priming the inside of the counterweight pipes using some of the PPG wash primer tested earlier for interior surfaces. This is a two part primer that is really durable so I thought it would be good for the inside of the counterweights. I put a cork in one end of the pipes, sealed the holes with tape and poured in a few ounces of primer. The pipes were then slowly spun as the primer was poured back into a container. The counterweights should have a nice coating of the primer inside. After sanding the outside of the pipes I primed with some oil-based flat gray paint from Lowes. After drying, I then applied a coat of aluminum enamel. Hopefully, the counterweights are well protected against corrosion.

All the components were then deburred and dimpled as needed. By the way, when dimpling the spar you need a smaller diameter female die for the holes on the bottom flange. The full size die will distort the spar flange. As an alternative, you could grind down a std die on one side or perhaps machine countersink the flange. I prefer the special small diameter die purchased from Cleaveland.

Finally, all edges were dressed and a few of the components were primed with the self-etching primer form Dupli-Color (ribs and reinforcement plates). All the paints and primers should be dry by tomorrow morning allowing final assembly to begin.
