Brief Description:  PPG wash primer

You may remember from earlier postings I have elected to keep priming of internal surfaces to a minimum. Nevertheless, some components do require priming either because they are not alclad or because of scratches during the fabrication and assembly process. Rattle cans of the Dupli-color self etching primer suffice for most of these small jobs, however, I continue to look for a more cost effective alternative for bigger jobs. For example, I am considering priming the wing ribs before assembly. There are numerous marrs resulting from manufacturing and fabrication tasks and the process of riveting will probably create additional imperfections.

One of the primers I came across on the web was PPG 1791. The reported results were good and the finish looked really nice in the photos. I know, no ones is going to see the primer once the structure is buttoned up but I am a little particular. Anyway, I picked up a quart and did some test pieces. This primer is really durable but since I have very little painting experience, I found it difficult to get a nice even finish. Being a wash primer, it is translucent and watery as it is applied and can look rather splotchy. If you try to even out the finish with an additional light coat then you risk the weight of too much primer. My conclusion, it's a great primer but requires a more experienced painter to get best results.

I will continue my search.
