Brief Description:  Left flap brackets, hinge & match drilling

After further inspection of the fit between the rear rib flanges and the rear spar I decided to use the shims prepared earlier. The shims improve the fit and reduce the bending stress on the spar. The spar, shims, and rib flange were clamped together and the holes drilled using the spar pilot hole as a guide.

The FL-706A bracket was fabricated per the plans. Again, the bandsaw came in very handy in cutting the bracket. It was finished up with a vixen file and scotchbrite wheel. The holes were located and drilled in the bracket per the drawing.

I marked FL-706B for the required bend and accomplished the task with some hardwood blocks, a vise, and three vise-grips. The flat bracket was clamped between wood blocks in the vise positioned at the bend line. I then clamped the exposed portion of the bracket between two additional hard wood blocks (1/2" thick) placing vise-grips on each side near the bend line and a third at the top to use as a lever. It took a good bit of pressure to get the aluminum to bend. Thankfully, it only has to be bent about 6 degrees. Once bent, the bracket was clecoed in place and all the holes match drilled.

The final task for this session was to cut the flap hinge to length, clamp it in place and match drill to the front spar and skin. It looks like there are a couple alternatives for installing the hinge pins. One solution is to insert a single pin thru a drilled hole in the inboard aileron bracket and let the bracket backstop the pin. The other alternative involves two pins inserted from the middle of the flap and secured with safety wire. I think it's time to drop an email to a fellow builder to get some advice.
