WWI Replica Fighters
Page 1

Well, I am still 3-4 weeks away from my wing kit so the writing continues. If you read some of the entries under About the Builder, you may recall that I considered building a WWI replica fighter at one point. I eventually settled on the RV-8 for a number of reasons including standard construction, two-place, tandem cockpit, aerobatic, good overall performance, factory support, builder community, etc. Nevertheless, I remain fascinated by Robert Baslee's replica kits from Airdrome Aeroplanes in Holden. Missouri.

Robert usually has one or more of his planes at the Oshkosh gathering but I discovered his kits at a biannual fly-in at WPAFB, Ohio and then did additional research on the internet. I was able to locate a builder, Gwen Lucero in Findlay, of a Baslee Fokker D-VIII Razor and made arrangements for a visit to see the project. A year or so later I was able to see Gwen's completed aircraft at the WWI Rendevous at Wright Patterson AFB. She did a fantastic job on the construction including the paint.

As I said, the construction is entirely different than the RV series. You will see from the pictures below the aluminum tubing with the pop-riveted gussets at the joints (no welding). By the way, these aircraft are not ultralights and they are not approved for aerobatics. There are numerous models available representing both the Central and Allied powers. In addition, some of the models are full-size while others are reduced scale such as 3/4 or 7/8.
