CAP flying is indeed different with each mission requiring different skills. Aerial searches, of course, require primarily low altitude VFR search patterns at relatively slow speeds. Other missions such as ELT searches, transport, homeland security, cadet orientation, etc. demand different skill sets. Being the Air Force Auxiliary, the organization is paramilitary with a rank structure and considerable rules and regulations that govern all who serve. If you don’t mind regimentation, it can be a rewarding experience with enjoyable flying and camaraderie. By the way, there are tax benefits associated with the flying activities. You might want to check out the organization at their national website www.gocivilairpatrol.com.

In the early 1990s I had the opportunity to participate in the reorganization of the CAP pilots of Group VII based at Wright Patterson. The 70 pilots and observers in the Group were granted a charter and became Dayton Senior Squadron 701. I had the privilege of commanding the new unit from 1994 through 1997. This flying unit, the largest senior squadron in Ohio at the time, consisted of a diverse group of men and women including a wide array of ages, ethnic origins, educational backgrounds, and professions.

My time as commander provided the opportunity to manage and lead an unusual mix of individuals ranging from civilians (civil servants, public health and safety personnel, lawyers, business people) to active and retired military personnel of varying ranks. The variety of personnel and the volunteer nature of the Air Force Auxiliary provided unique leadership challenges not generally encountered in business. During my service with the unit, Squadron 701 received a unit citation for outstanding performance and was twice designated Squadron of the Year for Group VII, Ohio Wing. The members of 701 were and remain a great bunch of aviators.
