The squadron legal officer during my time with 701 was a major by the name of Jeff Hazlett. We flew together on a number of occasions and eventually the conversation got around to aircraft ownership. We discovered our mutual desire to own rather than rent a plane. So it was that early one morning over breakfast before a search exercise we worked out a partnership on the back of a napkin. Within a month and after some searching, test flying, a pre-buy inspection, and some negotiating we were the proud owners of N5966F, a 1977 Piper Archer II.

The partnership has been a great experience. The plane has proven to be a good choice and has never let us down in terms of reliability or cost. Jeff, whose personality is nothing like mine, has become my best friend and flying buddy. When the Archer leaves the hangar it is usually with both of us aboard alternating our time in the left seat.

Our flying preferences are about as different as our personalities. Jeff has done some commercial flying and really likes the instrument environment (as long as the weather isn’t too bad). I would describe him as a “by the numbers” pilot. That is, he is meticulous in all aspects of the flight. He sticks to the proper target airspeeds, altitudes, almost never banks more than 30 degrees, loves big metropolitan airports and flies an ILS like the plane is on rails. He is the kind of aviator you want as a partner, someone you can trust.
