My Current Wings

Most of my flying during the late 1980s was typical including trips to airshows and aviation events and, of course, the breakfast, lunch and dinner runs to airport restaurants in the tri-state area. My most memorable flying experience by far, however, was a business trip originating in Ohio with stops in Illinois, Nebraska, Salt Lake City, Wendover (the WWII training base for the atomic missions), Nevada, San Francisco, El Paso, Austin, Houston, Birmingham, Tennessee and finally back to Ohio. The trip was accomplished in 10 days (45 flying hours) under VFR with only a ½ day loss due to weather. As you can imagine, I flew over all types of terrain and it was the trip of a lifetime. By the way, my fellow aviator on the trip worked for the same corporation and was a retired Air Force officer with thousands of hours in the cockpit. With my limited mountain flying experience, I would not have ventured through the Rockies without some serious experience in the seat next to me.

As the hamburger runs and the same airport scenery started to wear thin, I began looking for different flying experiences. In 1988 I rediscovered the Civil Air Patrol and found an active group of pilots based at Wright Patterson AFB. As you may know, CAP is the Auxiliary of the USAF and under their direction flies 85-90% of the inland search and rescue missions within the U.S. What you may not know is that CAP also owns the largest fleet of general aviation aircraft in the States.
